Berhampur: With farmers agitating in several parts of Odisha to press for adequate compensation to crop damage due to unseasonal rains, chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday said that an assistance package would be announced for them soon.

The state government will soon come out with a package to assist the affected farmers, he said during a visit to affected villages in Ganjam district.

BERHAMPUR: Panic gripped the locals, as traffic on NH 5 near IRE chowk was disrupted for sometime today following leakage of hydrochloric acid from a tanker.

The tanker loaded with the acid left Jayashree Chemicals at Ganjam this evening for Andhra Pradesh.

The leakage was spotted at IRE chowk when locals seeing the fumes ran for their lives.

BERHAMPUR: With the death of two more persons on Tuesday, the toll due to diarrhoea in the last one week went up to 12 in the tribal- dominated Buratal panchayat under Patrapur block in Ganjam district. Cases of diarrhoea were first reported in Adapathar village and it later spread to Kusamala and Batarasahi.

BERHAMPUR: Despite the Union Government's incentives for oil palm cultivation, it could not be taken up on a massive scale in the State. The fruit is being grown in over 700 hectares in Ganjam and Gajapati districts since 2006.

According to official records, while only 34 hectares could be brought under cultivation in 2006, it was increased to 150 hectares the following year.

BERHAMPUR: With Bhopal gas leak case fresh in mind, panic gripped Berhampur on Monday after chlorine gas leaked from a cylinder at a Public Health department store. At least 50 persons were affected and 35 treated in hospital.

The leak was stopped by a team of experts from Jayshree Chemicals, which supplies chlorine to Ganjam town for water purification, after eight hours.
