Visakhapatnam, Sept. 7: Visakhapatnam would soon become another Chennai at the rate in which the groundwater in the district is turning salty. Residents of coastal battery near the collectorate, Kota Veedhi, the old post office and the port areas in One Town, Mulakuddu and Nagarapalem besides, parts of Thagarapuvalasa in the rural areas were in distress recently after it was found that the water they drew from their wells tasted salty.

Rejuvenation of ponds and lakes should be given top priority in order to improve the underground water table. New ponds and tanks should be constructed where ever rainwater can easily sink into the ground, suggested education expert M Shriramareddy.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday, he said, Gujarat government was the right example, in this regard. The new ponds and tanks constructed in that State and also, the projects meant for ensuring the sinking of rainwater into the ground, were all fruitful.

AHMEDABAD: Sensing the vagaries of nature with rains getting scanty this year in Ahmedabad, officials of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are chalking out a contingency plan to keep potable water woes away from the city.

In the past, Ahmedabad had witnessed water riots over the scarcity of drinking water. To start with, AMC is now constructing 100 percolation wells at AMC premises in six different municipal zones of the civic body within a year.
