In impoverished Yunnan Province in southwestern China, a confrontation is brewing between economic growth and habitat preservation-and authorities are sending mixed signals about their intentions.

Air Quality Impact Assessment studies of Singoli Bhatwari Hydroelectric Power Plant are reported. The plant site is connected to the dam site via a road. Computations of four pollutants namely Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Oxides of Nitrogen and Suspended Particulate Matter have been made at various sites around the plant using CALINE-3 model. Sources considered responsible for air pollution are vehicular traffic on road and construction activities around the plant site.

For 15 days in January, hundreds of men, women and children marched across river valleys of India's Uttarakhand state to raise awareness about government plans to build dams. The government intends to build 220 large, medium and small dams in the upper reaches of the Ganges River basin.
