Western-style diets and processed food are becoming ever more popular in India’s cities, while traditional, healthy, sustainable foods are being forgotten. India’s on the edge of two possible futures: a future that’s well fed and healthy; or a future of ‘Western-style’ diets and a public health epidemic of obesity.

This public service advertisement produced by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is to promote rainwater harvesting as the lesson from the past, which provides us the solution for the future. The spot revolves around the concept of catching rain in a neighbourhood, creating a cascading effect. People begin to collect water in a variety of objects and in fact, in anything they can lay their hands on. Using a medley of emotions –wonder, comic and even the absurd – the idea that rainwater harvesting is a community effort and it is about building a sharing and caring society is subtly woven in.

The Madhya Pradesh government wants to open the Union Carbide plant to the public. The principal secretary of the state claims this will dispel the “myth” about toxins left at the site. A recent study by Centre for Science and Environment found that the profile of chemicals found within the factory premises matches that of chemicals found in adjacent localities. Moderately persistent chemicals called Carbamates were also found in the city’s groundwater. Clearly, the factory is polluting the environment even 25 years after the plant was shut down.
