A study carried out by the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) has reported heavy metal pollution in Vembanad Lake and the rivers emptying into it.

The Vembanad wetland system is straddles Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts. It lies at sea level, and is separated from the Arabian Sea by a narrow barrier island.

KOCHI: It seems that the direction given by the district administration to various agencies to take strict action against those polluting the Periyar has fallen on deaf ears.

The Kerala State Pollution Control Board has served show cause notices to four companies for discharging effluents from their units in the Edayar industrial area into the Periyar during the Onam holidays.

The Nellurhalli lake in Whitefield is in a state of total decay, with sewerage lines discharging effluents from factories and a private hospital in the vicinity.

The lake has been reduced to a polluted water body with hyacinths and carcasses, garbage on the banks and encroachments along the periphery.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) is tight-lipped over test reports of samples taken by its teams from 38 industrial units in Ludhiana on July 16 and 17.
