JAIPUR: Water Institute, a joint initiative of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Rajasthan Government, has become functional here in the Rajasthan capital. A brief ceremony in the rented premises of the Institute over the weekend marked its commencement. The Water Institute is the outcome of a memorandum of understanding signed by CII and the State Government during the Water Summit here in 2006 in the presence of the then Governor of Rajasthan, Pratibha Patil, for setting up a state-of-the-art centre of excellence providing solution to all issues related to water.

As part of its efforts to supply electricity of high quality free from disruptions to the residents of the State Capital, Jaipur Vidyut Vitaran Nigam has started installing 8 MVA power transformers at prime locations here. The first such transformer was installed at the Residency sub-station here on Monday. Jaipur discom Chairman and Managing Director R. G. Gupta said an extensive network of 8 MVA transformers would be established across the Pink City to replace the existing 5 MVA converters.

As the city is not yet ready to provide the basic civic amenities, the mayor on Wednesday announced some emergency measures to tackle a repeat of Tuesday-like situation in the city.

Milk producers attached to cooperative societies supplying milk to Jaipur Dairy have threatened to stop their deliveries unless the public sector dairy reverses its decision to drastically reduce the payments by "arbitrarily' changing the solid non-fat (SNF) norms. The Rajasthan Dugdha Utpadak Sangh said here that Jaipur Dairy was paying an abysmal Rs.2 to 8 per litre to the cattle breeders for milk supplied by them, but had raised the milk prices for consumers thrice during the past two months. This has led to a loss of Rs.1.50 crore a month to the milk producers.

The Rajasthan Government on Thursday declared 2,381 villages in 10 districts as scarcity-hit following extensive damage to rabi crops caused by frost and cold wave earlier this year. The maximum number of 1,722 such villages are in Jaipur, followed by 249 in Sriganganagar, 178 in Jhalawar, 103 in Tonk, 43 in Nagaur, 29 in Jodhpur, 25 in Sawai Madhopur, 14 in Bikaner, 13 in Sikar and five in Jaisalmer.
