Concern over decline of Rajasthan's State bird population

The critically-endangered grassland species, the Great Indian Bustard, will be counted in the desert terrain of Rajasthan in the second week of February. Rajasthan, specially its desert region, accounts for maximum population of the bird which is globally threatened and listed in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Jaipur: Malnutrition among children in Rajasthan has taken ominous proportions. The Hungama (Hunger and Malnutrition) survey carried out recently by Naandi Foundation indicates that the situation in many districts has worsened when compared to what it was about a decade back.

The Hungama Survey, released on Tuesday by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, mentions 10 districts in Rajasthan. These districts are among a sample size of 112 districts in the country.

Chennai The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Reliance Power are joining forces to build what will be the country’s largest solar photovoltaic power plant.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) said on Monday it is part-funding a project with India's Reliance Power to build what it said would be India's largest solar photovoltaic power plant.

Multilateral funding agency Asian Development Bank today said it would provide Rs 250 crore ($48 million) loan to Reliance Power for its solar energy project in Rajasthan.

"ADB is providing a long-term loan of up to Rs 250 crore to finance the 40 MW Dahanu Solar Power Project located at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan," an official statement said. The project is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2012.

Jaisalmer: Suzlon Energy Limited, which ranks fifth in the world for generating power from winds, is set to generate power from sea winds.

The Asian Development Bank will provide Rs 221 crore to Reliance Power for its Rs 700-crore 40 MW solar project in Rajasthan. The US Exim Bank has already agreed to fund Rs 304 crore.

The Centre will shortly be making an atlas of the many windmills that are fast being built in this desert district. The atlas will not only help regulate the growth of windmills here but will also keep a track of areas where windmills are being set up.

In a bid to promote alternate sources of energy the state government has been actively pursuing the setting up of windmills in the desert districts of Jaisalmer and Barmer. Not only hundreds of windmills have already been set up in these parts but hundreds more by prominent players are fast coming up.
