Jamshedpur, July 24: Tata Steel Zoological Society has lost a family member.

Varsha, the ailing female leopard, died this morning in the zoo hospital.

A post-mortem was done before the nine-year-old was put in an incinerator.

A favourite among children, Varsha fell sick after liver complications about a month ago. She had stopped taking food and had lost her strength to be ferocious.

Her condition deteriorated gradually till she became completely immobile. She died at 10.15 am today.

Jamshedpur, July 24: Jindal Steel and Power Limited has opened its local office in the city to expedite the process of land acquisition for its greenfield project.

The office that came up in New Baradwari would deal with the process of land acquisition for its proposed 5-million-tonne steel plant project.

The plant will be set up at Asanboni, about 25km from Jamshedpur.

The office premises would remain busy with the visitors, especially rayiats possessing landed properties at Asanboni and also the middlemen.

chlorine leak at a private residential area in Jamshedpur affected about 300 residents on May 27. The cause of the leak was traced to Tata Motors dumping an unused chlorine cylinder, once used by its water treatment plant, in the vicinity of the housing colony about 10 years ago. The chlorine started leaking after the cylinder rusted and its walls gave away due to the pressure of the gas.

An elephant and her one-year-old calf were electrocuted near Dimna lake near here on Monday. The incident occurred when the calf, which was walking ahead of its mother, came in contact with a hanging live wire near the lake. The mother elephant rushed to rescue her child and too came in contact with the wire, divisional forest officer (Dalma wildlife sanctuary), Sidharth Tripathy said, adding both elephants were killed on the spot.
