The Coimbatore Corporation Council on Monday accorded approval for the waste-to-energy project. At the urgent meeting, the Council decided to implement the project, which will use 500 metric tonnes waste a day to generate power. The Council approving of the project comes days after Finance and Taxation Committee Chairperson R. Prabhakaran made an announcement in this regard in the Corporation Budget for 2013-14.

For millions of slum dweller in Delhi, there is finally some reassuring news in the form of amendments brought in by the Delhi Government in its slum policy.

As per a notification issued on February 25, this year, lakhs of slum dwellers would be benefited by the liberalised norms on their identification and entitlement for rehabilitation. Stating that it was the pressure mounted by the slum dwellers themselves which made the Delhi Government change several conditions for eligibility for rehabilitation, Ramendra Kumar, secretary general of Delhi Shramik Sangathan, said the major amendments include the change in the eligibility condition.

Scheme announced in Union budget

The move to purchase another 10,000 buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and enhanced support in the 12th Five Year Plan will give an impetus to the bus transport system in the State. The decision to purchase the buses was announced in the Union budget as the 14,524 buses already on the road had made a big contribution to the urban transport system. A sum of Rs.14,873 crore has been allocated in the budget and a significant portion is to support the purchase of 10,000 buses.

Drops plans to take up project under PPP model

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has decided not to take up the proposed ‘golden quadrilateral’ project to construct 25-kilometres of elevated road in the City under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model as planned earlier. In the budget 2013-14, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had announced the proposal to take up the golden quadrilateral project to reduce traffic snarls in the City.

JAIPUR: With increase in allocation of funds for projects running under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in the Union budget, the Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL) has geared up to submit proposals for 500 new low-floor buses.

Already 100 new buses have been added to the JCTSL making the total strength of low-floor buses to 400. The additional 500 new buses will boost the public transportation in Jaipur.

With the Union urban ministry emphasizing the funding of major transportation projects in the country, Gujarat's cities have readied teams to lobby for multi-crore BRTS projects to be taken up on priority basis in the coming JNNURM committee meeting. The Union budget has made provisions for almost Rs 14,873 crore - a major portion of which will be directed at buying 10,000 buses across the country.

Gujarat cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara which are either at key points in their BRTS projects, or have yet to start work, would be visiting Delhi in the coming few weeks.

Public transport in cities would get a boost as 10,000 new buses would hit roads during 2013-14.
