Preliminary civil works for a waste-to-energy power plant began at Venkatamangalam village on Monday. The non-incineration facility will produce power from solid waste generated in Tambaram and Pallavaram municipalities. A bhoomi pooja was performed at the 50-acre site at Venkatamangalam, located around 15 kilometres from Tambaram and coming under Kattankulathur panchayat union, Kancheepuram district.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Bench, on Monday refused to entertain a plea from the Pallavaram Municipality to allow it to dump garbage in the Pallavaram ‘Periya Eri’ till the establishment of a solid waste management facility at an alternative site is completed.

The bench ordered the filing of a status report on the alternative arrangements being made by the authority to consider any action in the issue.
When the matter came up for hearing before the bench of judicial member Justice M Chockalingam and expert member Prof R Nagendran, N R Chandran, senior counsel representing the municipality, said that consent had been obtained to establish a solid waste management facility at a site in Venkatamangalam.

The district environmental engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Kancheepuram, has submitted to the member secretary of the Board that a plastic unit be directed to shut down.

“It is submitted and recommended that direction may be issued to the unit under Section 33 (A) of Water (P and CP) Act, 1974 and Section 31 (A) of the Air (P and CP), Act, 1981 for closure of the unit and disconnection of power supply,” said the note from the district environmental engineer.

Relief for Pallavaram Municipality

The Pallavaram Muncipality got some relief from the National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, on Thursday on the issue of dumping garbage. The Tribunal directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to make a spot inspection on the new site at Venkatamangalam mooted by the municipality and to accord ‘consent to establish’ without further delay.

Residents to get 20-litre cans at Rs. 12; novel project to boost local body’s income

Amidst the growing popularity of packaged drinking water, Mudichur panchayat near Tambaram has ventured into a novel project of supplying purified water in 20-litre cans at a subsidised price to its residents. The panchayat will soon begin distributing water that has been purified in a reverse osmosis plant and packaged in 20-litre cans. The cans will be supplied at Rs. 12 against the retail price of a maximum of Rs. 30.
