THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With Kerala wallowing in acute power crises and longterm energy prospects remaining bleak, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is now seriously gunning for home-generated power by setting up a 1,000 MW thermal power plant in the state.

The KSEB has identified "specific land" for the coalbased plant, KSEB chairman Rajeev Sadanandan said. He did not disclose the precise location zoomed in on by the power-starved Board, but the KSEB is eyeing Kasargod district, sources said.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala will join the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) based in Vienna, Austria.

Electricity Minister A.K. Balan and Director of the Energy Management Centre Dharesan Unnithan held discussions with International Director of the REEEP Marianne Osterkorn and Deputy Director Binu Parthan in Vienna on Saturday and came to an understanding on the State joining the partnership.

KOCHI: Tribal people encroached the Devikulam divisional forest office premises on Saturday morning. A group of people, including women and children trespassed into the area. The police had stopped another attempt to encroach the forest land at Perinjamkutty on Friday.

The tribal people, who were given land at Chinnakkanal as part of the rehabilitation scheme, encroached into the area, said the officials.The encroachment attempt was made alleging that the given land was not suitable for residential purposes due to disturbance from wild elephants.
