The government would give a special dispensation to state-owned entities such as NTPC for the development of captive blocks under a new policy to be announced within a week, coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal told FE in an exclusive interview.

Renowned industrialist and Congress MP Naveen Jindal today visited Godda in an attempt to set off acquisition of land for its proposed power plant site at the tribal dominated Sundarpahari block.

I represent the Forum for Better Visakha (FBV) based at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. We have been active for quite sometime in highlighting the meaning of "development" as perceived by the local communities. I have tried to document the relevant concerns in my article on Sompeta in Economic and Political Weekly.

Pollution and displacement increasingly threaten the life and livelihood-indeed the very existence - of several rural communities. Panchayati Raj can play a very important role in checking this, but this potential has not been adequately realised yet. A lot of work needs to be done to realise this potential of panchayat raj in checking pollution and displacement.

There are complaints from the investors that the State government takes a very long time in allotting land for setting up power projects. This not only delays industrialisation but also enhances the cost of the project. Hence the government is being criticised for entering into pacts with industrialists but going slow later.
