NEW DELHI: The Centre is planning to give a 26 per cent share in mining profits to tribal people and to set up a regulatory body to check illegal mining, Union Minister of Mines B.K. Handique informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
NEW DELHI: A Group of Ministers (GoM) will discuss on Thursday issues pertaining to illegal mining, a ban on iron ore exports, the new mining legislation and setting aside a share in the profits of mining companies for the development of tribal areas.

Days after Union Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh lauded the Karnataka government
for imposing a ban on iron ore export, Union Mines Minister B.K. Handique came
down strongly on the State government for failing to get its act together on
checking illegal mining.
All discussion of illegal mining, specially of iron ore, has to keep in mind two things. First, the nature of legality cannot be defined in narrow terms of mining laws, but needs to cover the environmental and social goods that lie in its ambit. Second, the massive growth in mining is directly related to the nature of economic liberalisation and loosening of government controls.
The mines ministry has turned down a suggestion by environment minister Jairam Ramesh that only those companies be allowed to bid for mining leases in a state which would agree to set up the end-use industry there.
