Sewage is one which is flowing through network sewers. It may go to treatment facility or disposed elsewhere with or without treatment.

Regarding potentiality of Waterways, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) declared River Brahmaputra in Assam as National Waterway -2 in 1988. IWAI undertakes various river conservancy works including hydrographic surveys in order to maintain the targeted depth, provide navigational aids and terminal facilities with cargo handling infrastructure to facilitate IWT. 20 rivers in the North Eastern region have been declared as national waterways. The Ministry provides technical guidance to State Governments through Central Water Commission (CWC) and Ganga Flood Control Commission (GFCC) in formulation of flood management projects. During XII Plan, a total of 632 projects for Rs.58594.59 crore were received for techno-economic appraisal out of which 305 projects at an estimated cost of Rs.13262.78 crore were cleared by the appraisal agencies.
