Caurem villagers under the banner of Caurem Adivasi Bachao Samiti on Thursday sought the intervention of the Chief Minister and the Indian Bureau of Mines to stop the mining operation at the Devapan Mine immediately.

The villagers called on the Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat at his Malbhat residence here this morning and impressed upon him the need to stop the operation with immediate effect.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a special plan for the development of 35 districts affected by Naxalism to address issues like healthcare, schooling and drinking water. Under the plan, each of the 35 districts will get `25 crores every year.

Undeterred by strong objections from opposition parties and several non-government groups, the Maharashtra government is to proceed with the Maharashtra Special Economic Zones and Designated Areas Bill in the legislature during the winter session beginning on December 1 at Nagpur.

The bill was introduced in the budget session in April but was not taken up for discussion.
