KOCHI: The recent findings by the team from School of Industrial Fisheries, Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), is an indication that there should be strict monitoring of exotic fishes being introduced in paddy fields as they gradually find their way into the natural systems.

KOCHI: The Periyar lake has been heavily invaded by African Mushi (clarias gariepinus) making it almost certain that the endangered local fishes in the water body would become extinct in the near future.

Farmers demand release of water for irrigation
THENI: Storage level in the Periyar dam crossed the minimum required level 112 feet to enable public works engineers to release water for irrigation here on Tuesday evening.

Water level stood at 112.5 feet on Tuesday, thanks to a massive increase in inflow to the dam and intermittent showers for the past three days.

KOCHI: District Collector M Beena, on Monday instructed the Water Authority, the Pollution Control Board and the Aluva Municipality to take steps to prevent the disposal of waste materials in the Periyar. The instruction was given at a meeting convened by the Human Rights Commission.
