The Supreme Court on Friday pulled up the governments of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for failing to stop pollutants from flowing into Yamuna from the national Capital and Noida.

The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the State government to immediately provide security to Veerendra Patil, an advocate hailing from Talaguppa village in Soraba taluk of Shimoga district, who had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition complaining about the encroachment of about 400 acres of forest land.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice Aravind Kumar issued oral direction in this regard when Mr. Patil moved an application complaining that encroachers had attacked his family members and had caused extensive damage to their property on August 5.

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court on Friday green-lighted the felling of trees to expand highways in Saurashtra by rejected a PIL which sought to restrain the administration from chopping down nearly 10,262 trees.

While dismissing the PIL, however, the bench of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala ordered the authorities to plant three times to the number of trees that will be chopped off in the road-widening process. This means the authorities will have to plant 30,000 trees.

Shillong: The Shillong bench of the Guahati High Court has directed the State Government to submit a report on whether provisions of the Forest Conservation Act 1980 has been complied while granting permission of establishment of cement plants and limestone mines in Jaintia Hills. Initiating a suo-moto public interest Litigation petition, the court on July 27 directed the government to submit the report in the form of an affidavit within four weeks time.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare and the Department of Telecommunication on a pubic interest litigation seeking a direction to remove mobile phone towers from residential premises and public places and ban their installation at these sites in future.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw asked the Ministry and the Department to file replies to the petition by August 9, the next date of hearing.

Shillong: The Shillong bench of Gauhati High Court has sought a report from the state government on the recent coal mine tragedy in Garo Hills and also on the steps taken to ensure safety of miners in the State.

Accepting a suo-moto PIL on the coal mine mishap, which reportedly claimed 15 lives, the bench directed the state government to submit the report in the form of affidavit by August 28.

Disposing of a suo motu public interest litigation petition based on a photo feature published by “The Hindu,” a Bench comprising Justice R. Banumathi and Justice G. M. Akbar Ali directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials to monitor and ensure that municipal solid waste was not dumped in water bodies or burnt on roadsides. It also instructed the Madurai Corporation Commissioner and Collector to ensure strict enforcement of Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000.
