NGT Worried About Illegal Dealers Selling Packaged Water

The western zone bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Pune has passed an order prohibiting unauthorized extraction of groundwater for commercial use after it was found that the presence of large quantities of fluoride in it is affecting villagers in 12 districts.

On the occasion of World Earth Day, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a river cleaning drive in Mutha river where nearly 10 tonne of waste were removed from the riverbed on Tuesday.

At 5.6%, State’s Prevalence Rate On Borderline

Pune: Cases of paediatric tuberculosis (TB) have gone down in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad but the number has risen in rural parts of the district. Of the 7,275 cases registered in the state in 2013, about 400 were found in Pune district. While the city reported 201 cases in 2012, the number dropped to 147 a year later.

Pune: As many as 337 villages in Pune district have been included in the eco-sensitive area (ESA) of the Western Ghats, as per the draft notification the ministry of environment and forests issued on Tuesday.

However, experts pointed out that the authorities will have to take several measures, particularly involving locals, to ensure that declaring the area as eco-sensitive translates into the conservation of its biodiversity.
