Navelim villagers on Sunday demanded the intervention of the government to save the once picturesque Xelpem lake polluted by the discharge of sewage waters from neighbouring Margao city.
Agitated villagers sought to know why the government has been going slow in working out a solution to the problem despite the fact that sewage waters flow continuously flow into the lake every day.

Sewerage waste of nearby localities is being disposed of in Rawal Lake, the National Assembly (NA) was informed on Wednesday.

In query made by Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the lower house that due to increase in population and inadequate sewerage disposal mechanism, effluent partially came down in Rawal Lake.

The Nellurhalli lake in Whitefield is in a state of total decay, with sewerage lines discharging effluents from factories and a private hospital in the vicinity.

The lake has been reduced to a polluted water body with hyacinths and carcasses, garbage on the banks and encroachments along the periphery.
