Under the Central government’s scheme of Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP), five slums of Shillong have been selected for upgradation.

The selected slums are Mawbah, Demseniong, Lower Mawprem, Pyntohrumkhrah and Kynjatphutbol. Informing this here on Thursday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the total project cost has been estimated Rs 2129.73 lakh of which the Centre’s share will be Rs 1658.05 lakh. The rest will to borne by the state government.

It is not just the Mithi river that is susceptible to degradation due to encroachment and dumping. There are at least two more rivers and six natural drains in the city that are highly vulnerable and in need of immediate attention, as per a recent study funded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

These are the Oshiwara river, Poisar river, Vikhroli nullah, Mogra nullah, Tilak Nagar nullah, Piramal Nagar nullah, Irla nullah and Safed Pul nullah and are part of the five rivers and 19 natural drains in the city. According to the study, the Dahisar river also needs attention but is not as critical as the others.

The Punjab Government on Sunday approved a Rs 8,745 crore total revamp plan, under the Punjab Urban Development Mission (PUDM), to upgrade all civic amenities in all the 142 cities of the State.

Nearly 500 jhuggi dwellers from eight slum tenements on Wednesday became proud owners of their dwelling units, at least on paper, as they were presented with allotment letters to their houses at a function at Delhi Secretariat. The Government has in this scheme for the first time used biometrics to ensure that there was no duplication in allotment and no sale of the flats that are meant for rehabilitation.

While Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit handed over the allotment letters to 40 eligible beneficiaries, the rest were presented the allotment letters at the function itself.

The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board on Wednesday approved construction of 7,400 houses for slum-dwellers under the Economically Weaker Section category at Bhalaswa Jahangirpuri.

At a meeting in Delhi Secretariat, the Board also gave its nod for construction of a community hall at Trilokpuri and passed its budget for the year 2012-13. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who chaired the meeting of the Board, said the EWS houses would have five floors and would come up at a cost of Rs 356.79 crore.

In a bid to make the city slum-free, the Delhi government has decided to start allocation of around 10,000 low cost flats from next month. The project is, however, delayed for more than three years.

The government will allocate 500 flats to slum dwellers in June and the allocation would continue thereafter, Delhi urban development minister A.K. Walia said.
