KOKRAJHAR, Dec 7: The people of flood and erosion-prone Dhemaji district under the banner of the Ganatantric Nagarik Suraksha Mancha (GNSM) raised their demand for permanent flood and erosion control structures in the district.

This paper suggests an approach to a convincing method for control of surficial soil erosion by using Jute Geotextiles (JGT). The approach can be extended to other natural geotextiles as well.

Soil erosion is a natural process accelerated by human activities. Each year, erosion of surface soil from river basins amounts to 60 billion tons, resulting in 24 billion tons of sediment flux to the oceans in the world and almost 25 billion tons of soil lost from agricultural land.

Climate change has resulted in several kinds of aberrations in the weather phenomenon all over the globe. The recent unprecedented rainfall leading to floods in 13 districts of North Karnataka was said to be one such event.

Wary of the downstream impact of the dam constructed by China on the river Brahmaputra, the State Government has decided to move the Centre urging the latter to take up the issue with its Chinese counterpart.

Referring to the recent reports about China going in a big way in dam construction on the river Brahmaputra by diverting its flow, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said,

It has long been felt that our natural environment should be mapped and monitored with active participation of agencies responsible for managing natural resources, industry groups and community organizations. This organized information forms a basis for storing soil and land databases for the implementation and monitoring of various efforts on land resource management.

NUMALIGARH, Oct 14: The Dansiri river has been continuously eroding vast areas of Dhodanggaon of Numaligarh for the last few days. At least 300 bighas of land have been submerged in the river. Pashim Dhodang LP school is also on the verge of getting submerged in the river but the local MLA and MP have shown the least signs of bother on the matter.
