GUWAHATI, July 2

In a field study five grass species, viz. Marvel grass, Para grass, Vetiver grass, Karnal grass and Napier grass were evaluated to assess their suitability as biological reclaiming agent and vegetative barriers for reclaiming as well as reducing soil erosion and enhancing in situ water conservation in a moderate sodic clay soil.

In India, seabuckthorn is widely distributed at high altitude, cold arid Trans Himalayan regions of Ladakh, Lahul-Spiti, parts of Chamba and upper Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. It plays an important role in soil erosion control, slope stabilization, reclamation of degraded and wastelands.

Soil and water are two very scarce important natural resources without which crop production is not possible. Soil degradation due to erosion and the depletion of ground water resources are the two major environmental problems threatening agricultual production and productivity in the riverine belt of Assam.

Most countries require an environmental impact assessment (EIA) before giving the green light to a mining project. EIA processes provide a valuable opportunity for citizens to participate in decisions
about mines.

Resentment prevails among the river engineers here over the persistent pressure from a powerful lobby in the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for use of geo-bags to resist Brahmaputra erosion in Palasbari-Gumi and Dibrugarh. It needs mention here that the State Government is working on a scheme to protect Palasbari, Bankuwal (Kaziranga) and Dibrugarh town with an ADB loan.
