DIBRUGARH, April 30: The erosion at Nagaghuli here by River Brahmaputra is going on unabated.
The Superintendent of Police Abjijit Bora visited the area. Meanwhile, the locals of the area put up bamboo porcupine here today. They decided to take some initiative to counter this problem yesterday after the apathetic attitude of the Water Resources Department disappointed them.
Assam Congress has called for declaring erosion as a national problem.
In a letter to Union Minister for Water Resources Paban Kumar Bansal, Congress Lok Sabha Chief whip Paban Singh Ghatowar said erosion is one of the major problems of Assam.

SILCHAR, April 25: Residents along river side areas of Aryapatty and Dhakaipatty are stirred by fresh panic as the erosion by river Barak is slowly but steadily advancing, threatening their houses.
The landslide disaster on 8 August 2009 near Kuity village in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand State buried two villages and took 43 lives. The landslide, triggered by cloud burst resulted in massive debris flow along a stream channel. The site is still in danger as shown by the presence of huge quantity of debris and ground cracks on the slope.
The campaign to save Majuli, the largest riverine island in the world, received a shot in the arm on Tuesday with Union Forest and Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh saying the Centre would soon declare it an eco-sensitive zone.
