Though the change of course of a river is not a new phenomenon, the latest change of course of the mighty Brahmaputra has created a major concern. The mighty river is turning south and it will have an adverse effect on Kaziranga National Park along with Dergaon and Golaghat.

The comparative assessment of morphologic runoff and annual silt load from micro-watersheds can help in establishing relationships between these parameters with objectives of controlling runoff, conservation of soil, reduction of reservoir silt load and enhanced groundwater resources in the micro-watersheds.

The mighty Brahmaputra has wiped out nearly 4,000 square kilometres of area at a rate of 80 square kilometres per year, destroying more than 2500 villages and affecting more than five million people in Assam.
