The matter related to failure to take action for protecting Astamudi wetland and Vembanad-kol wetland, a Ramsar site in Kollam district of Kerala.

The Kerala State Pollution Control Board had conducted a sanitation survey of Ashtamudi lake and found that the main reason for the pollution of the lake water was the indiscriminate discharge of sewage and dumping of solid waste from households and establishments.

There is no sewerage network in Jajmau, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh where all the tannery units are situated. Thus, untreated domestic sewage generated from Jajmau area also gets mixed with industrial effluent that goes through the conveyance channel into CETP.

Particular grievance is absence of requisite consents under the Air and the Water Acts and siting criteria, resulting in violation of law and air pollution to the detriment of public health and the environment.
