SHILLONG: The mineral-rich Jaintia Hills district faces an acute drinking water crisis as water from its major rivers has been declared ‘unfit’ for human consumption due to high level of acidity caused by unscientific mining. The rivers downstream of coal mining areas and cement plants have turned blue five years back, a phenomenon baffling even environmental scientists of the State.

On the first day of its functioning here, the National Green Tribunal's Circuit Court here set aside the environmental clearance granted by the Tamil Nadu government to the Chennai Corporation's integrated solid waste management facility at Perungudi.

Passing orders on an appeal by V. Srinivasan against the Tamil Nadu State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority and others, the tribunal headed by Justice C.V. Ramulu said that the project fell within Category A and the Union government (Ministry of Environment and Forests) alone could issue environment clearance (EC).

New monitoring parameters were used in the study. Since there is a growing concern about pesticide residues and heavy metals in water sources, the Central Pollution Control Board directed the APPCB to collect samples of water in addition to the routine samples collected once a year, preferably in the month of April, to ascertain the presence of micro-pollutants,
