With the 2008-09 crushing season to start within a month, the farmers and the sugar industry are squabbling on the contentious sugarcane price in Uttar Pradesh.

While the farmers want the cane price to be Rs 160 per quintal, the industry wants the State Advised Price (SAP) to be Rs 112.

Pune, October 3 No new sugar mills should be allowed in the state, even if the sugar commissioner has granted certificates, said Shivaji Deshmukh, director general of Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) in a report that was submitted to the Bombay High Court in late July. The report calls for a master plan to be prepared for the sugar industry in Maharashtra.

The objective of this study is to find out the optimum OLR at which the UASB reactor can be operated in treating domestic sewage and sugar mill effluent, in conjunction at a predetermined optimum mixing ratio of 75:25.

The Uttar Pradesh sugar mills have challenged the Allahabad High Court's recent ruling, which restored the Rs 125-130 state-advised price (SAP) of sugarcane for the 2007-08 season (October-September) in its final judgement.

The Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mills' Association (UPSMA), on behalf of the sugar mills, on Wednesday filed a special leave petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court, said industry sources.

The Uttar Pradesh government is taking immediate steps for total privatisation of the beleaguered sugar sector in the state.

This move is aimed at ushering in operational efficiency, improve production, reduce non-performing assets (NPAs) and mitigate non-productive overheads running into several crores of rupees annually.

The mills say the move will take away from them the areas they have developed over decades.

In a move that could help millions of farmers and bore a hole in the pockets of sugar producers, the Union Food Ministry has started work on a plan to do away with reservation of sugarcane area for mills.

At present, sugarcane farmers can sell only to that mill in whose area their fields are located. But this could change soon.
