Mumbai: Mumbai may have its own skywalk, which no other Indian city can boast of, but it is by no means a pedestrian-friendly city.

A secret report aims to make environmental clearance a standardised exercise that bypasses critical requirements.

New Delhi: Under the Yamuna Action Plan, about Rs 1,500 crore has been spent so far on cleaning the river and another project worth Rs 4,000 crore is ready to take off. This has, however, made little difference to the state of the river. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit recently observed that the river was no better than a drain.

KOLKATA: The Sunderbans tiger is falling prey to poaching. Thousands of families in the tidal region are losing their homes and livelihoods due to rising sea level and tidal currents. Unscientific construction and illegal felling is denuding the Himalayan foothills of its forest cover and triggering landslides. The Bhagirathi is gobbling up land as it changes course in Malda.

JAMMU: Observing that the preservation of ecology is a fundamental challenge, Governor N.N.Vohra said that the Amarnath Shrine Board shall take a firm initiative in funding eco-awareness-cum-conservation campaigns and supplementing the afforestation programmes in selected areas.

Emphasising the importance of preserving and maintaining the aesthetic environmental grandeur of the fragile Himalayan region during the Amarnath yatra, Governor NN Vohra today called for effective measures to ensure zero discharge of pollutants into Lidder and Sindh rivers.
