ANGUL: Coal supply to GRIDCO linked 460 MW Talcher Thermal Power Station (TTPS) was affected today due to closure of its feeding mine - Jagannath Talcher coalfield - by the state mining authorities.

TALCHER: In the absence of land to expand the mining operation, the 20-million tonne capacity Bhubaneswari opencast coal project at Talcher is facing imminent closure.

The land constraint has been a longstanding issue for the project. For the work to move ahead the villagers of Zillinda would have to be displaced, says a coal official.

Polluting units at an industrial area

Growing pollution thanks to rapid industrialisation has prompted the state government to draw up plans to address the problem.

The state has at least 107 sponge iron plants, which contribute significantly to pollution. Besides, there are several thermal plants and coalfields in Talcher-Angul and Ib valley area.

TALCHER: The top authorities of Jindal India Thermal Power Plant are contemplating to scrap the proposed 1200-MW power plant at Kaniha due to sustained opposition by land-losers.

ANGUL: Coal transportation in Talcher coalfield area, which supplies coal to seven states, has been hampered due to lack of infrastructure facilities. Millions of tonnes of coal stocked at various colliery pit heads could not be evacuated due to poor and dilapidated roads, according to sources.

BHUBANESWAR: The Centre has zeroed in on 24 industrial clusters across the country which have reached the threshold of their environmental carrying capacity and plans to intervene.

Development projects that involve displacement are currently a cause of growing concern everywhere. The worrisome aspect is that it is the poor who are hurt most in the process, becoming poorer than before.
