GUWAHATI, Oct 3: For the first time, Guwahati will be the venue of the first phase of presentation of the Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) under the Total Sanitation Campaign. President Pratibha Patil is scheduled to present the awards at a function to be held at the Sarusjai Sports Complex on October 20.

Eluru, Aug. 27: West Godavari collector G. Jayalakshmi called for efforts to realise total sanitation in the district by 2010. The collector held a review meet on sanitation with the officials here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Jayalakshmi said that individual sanitary latrines were sanctioned to 2.29 lakh families living below poverty line in the district and added that nearly 1.91 lakh ISLs were constructed so far. Out of 2,514 schools, toilets were constructed at 2,481 schools.

State-level workshop held in Jaipur JAIPUR: Experts attending a two-day State-level workshop on Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) and School Water Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SWSHE) here over the week-end underscored the significance of maintaining cleanliness in schools, which they said would ensure higher enrolments and retention of children, especially girls. The workshop was organised jointly by the UNICEF and the Rajasthan Council of Elementary Education (RCEE) as part of the activities during 2008 being observed as the international year of sanitation.

March 2009, target date for rehabilitation of manual scavengers Sanitary latrines for all rural households by 2012 Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Meira Kumar has urged Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja to ensure that all dry latrines in rural areas are converted into water seal latrines by March 2009. That is also the target date for rehabilitation of remaining manual scavengers.

All schools across the country will have toilet facilities by the year end, Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said on Thursday. While Sikkim, Puducherry, Mizoram and Haryana have already achieved this target, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan will do so by July. The remaining States that include Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Punjab, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be able to cover all schools by November.

As part of the various initiatives under the International year of sanitation, the Department of Drinking Water Supply organized a National Workshop on sustainable sanitation on 19th, 20th May, 2008 at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today laid stress on total sanitation for socio-economic uplift of the State's rural people. He also expressed the hope that the State would be able to achieve the total sanitation goals before 2012.
