Shillong: Five villages of West Garo HilJs district were given Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) awards under the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) in a function held at Rombagre village on April 29.

TSC was launched in West Garo Hills in 2004 and is implemented through the District Water and Sanitation Mission (DWSM) with an aim to promote hygiene in the rural areas.

The residence of Baghuwar have reason to smile. This little village in central Madhya Pradesh is proud of its hygiene and sanitation. Every family has access to a pucca indoor, water-economical toilet. '100 per cent open-air toilet free village' proclaims a sign at the panchayat ghar.

This report is a synthesis of three individual country studies carried out in Bangladesh, Nepal and Nigeria in 2008-2009 that investigate the sustainability and equity aspects of total sanitation programmes.

Clean drinking water and proper sanitation facilities are indispensable for a healthy life. Sanitation coverage in rural India has been growing at an impressive rate since 2001, thanks mainly to efforts made under the Total Sanitation Campaign. To add vigour to the campaign, an incentive scheme Nirmal Gram Puraskar was launched by the Government of India in 2003.

PARADIP: The Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) is into its fifth year of implementation in Jagatsinghpur district. Yet the achievement is far from satisfactory.
