Over 26,000 Houses Collapse

Bangalore: Northern Karnataka has gone virtually under water. Unprecedented rain and floods since Wednesday have cut off Raichur, Gulbarga, Bijapur, Koppal, Bellary and Bagalkot districts. Life came to a full stop on Friday with the collapse of road and communication networks and several trains to the region being cancelled.

July 23: Water levels in Almatti, Narayanapur and Tungabhadra dam rose to their maximum levels due to heavy rainfall in Karnataka. Water in Krishna river started flowing towards Indira Priyadarshini project in Jurala of Mahbubnagar district while water from Tungabhadra river flowed towards Srisailam project.
The irrigation officials expect the water to reach Srisailam reservoir on Friday night.

In the Tungabhadra sub basin (TBSB), Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) is currently seen in a number of smaller initiatives at local scale. The concept of integration is new in water sector and it has for the first time been specified in the National Water Policy (2000), the Karnataka State Water Policy (2002).

BANGALORE: For the first time in 35 years, the Department of Water Resources has taken up modernisation of the Tungabhadra Dam and canal system, which irrigates lakhs of acres of land in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, at a cost of Rs.192 crore.

Announcing this at a press conference, Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the work would be over by June-end.

Bangalore, April 17 Farmers, Government officials, scientists and NGOs engaged in improving water use patterns in the Tungabhadra basin have called for improved water management and cropping techniques to cope with two looming problems: inter-State disputes on resource use and the problems arising out of climate change.

The High Court has directed the State government to initiate appropriate action against those indulging in sand mining in the Tungabhadra river in the districts of Davangere, Haveri, Gadag and Bellary using mechanical devices.

A notification issuing work orders has reached the HLC superintending engineer (SE) office recently. The superintendent engineer, Mr Somireddy, has written to the contracting agencies to complete agreement signing by May 15. The HLC modernisation works will commence in January 2009 immediately after water supply from the Tungabhadra dam is stopped.
