New Delhi: Taking cognizance of TOI reports on the illegal construction of three roads inside the Rajokri Forest, an application has been filed with National Green Tribunal (NGT). The environment watchdog has now sent notices to the Delhi government and other agencies concerned.

Amicus curiae Raj Panjwani said, “The ridge area is being used for several non-forest purposes without any prior permission of the central government which is a clear violation of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, and orders of the Supreme Court.”

The National Green Tribunal has dismissed Hindalco's plea challenging the Maharashtra government's refusal to grant it three more months, after expiry of its forest clearance, to transport around 1.6 lakh tonnes of bauxite mined from Kolhapur district. A bench headed by Justice V R Kingaonkar also declined to direct the state government to forward the company's proposal, for more time, to the Centre for grant of approval.

The National Green Tribunal has reiterated its direction to authorities to ensure that no debris of any kind, including from construction, is thrown on the banks of the Yamuna. A Bench also directed the public authorities to get the debris removed and to maintain proper log/records. “All Municipal Corporations, the Delhi Development Authority, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the Central Public Works Department and other authorities shall duly act upon this order.”

New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal has noted that despite orders to the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh governments, debris dumping continues unabated along the Yamuna floodplain.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Bench, has rapped the Tirunelveli Collector and Sivagiri Tahsildar for their non-appearance in a case filed by the villagers of Nelkattumseval against the conversion of a stream into a road in Tirunelveli district.

R. Sundaraiah Thevar and R.Velusamy Thevar of Nelkattumseval village, Sivagiri taluk, filed an application before the National Green Tribunal, New Delhi seeking to restrain the authorities from converting the land into a road and further sought direction to maintain the subject survey land as it exists as per the revenue records. The application has been pending before the NGT since September last year.

Says project needs to be reassessed in view of conflicting reports of experts

After a lull for nearly a year, Nirma's cement plant in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district, is back in the spotlight. The National Green Tribunal has decided to re-evaluate the project by sending expert members for site inspection. On February 8, the tribunal bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar, observed there is little doubt that the project will adversely affect the environment.

The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, on Tuesday ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and other authorities, including the District Collector, Namakkal, asking them to explain the steps taken against illegal dyeing units running near Rasipuram in that district without effluent treatment plants and which were closed in Tirupur and Erode on orders of the Madras High Court.

J.Srinivasa Mohan, counsel for the villagers, said, “Following the orders of the Madras High Court, dyeing units running without effluent treatment plants were closed. However, illegal units are being set up rampantly in other parts of State such as Rasipuram.

The Supreme Court on Friday stopped construction and development work of industrial units at the Adani group-owned Adani Port special economic zone (APSEZ) at Mundra in Kutch pending clearances from the Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF). However, it allowed already functional units to continue business operations within APSEZ (formerly Mundra Port and SEZ).

A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, while disposing of the four petitions filed by Skaps industries, Ahistrom Fiber Composites (I), Oriental Carbon Chemicals and Dorf Ketal Speciality Catalyst, set aside the Gujarat High Court’s exparte order that halted commercial production of all 12 industrial units within the SEZ till environment clearance was granted by the MoEF in favour of APSEZ.
