The criteria set by the Ministry for selection of cities to be developed as Solar Cities include a city population between 0.50 to 50 lakh (with relaxation given to North- Eastern and hilly States, Islands and Union Territories) and initiatives already taken by the city in promoting renewable energy & energy efficiency and also a high level of commitment. Based on proposals received by the Government from various States, in-principle approval has been given to 48 Cities to be developed as Solar Cities in the country.
