Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Discharge of industrial waste into the rivers, 07/01/2019. As per the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 industrial units are required to install effluent treatment plants(ETPs) and to treat their effluents to comply the stipulated environmental standard before discharging it into any water bodies. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), there are 2743 Grossly Polluting Industries (GPIs) in the country discharging their effluents into various water bodies, including rivers.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Death of wild animals in rail and road accidents, 07/01/2019. The number of death of wild animals in road and rail accidents in the country are not collated by the Ministry. However, as per information collected from the states the number of death of elephants, lion and tigers in road/rail accidents in the country as available with the Ministry during the last three years are given at Annexure I, Annexure II and Annexure III.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Untreated sewage flowing into the rivers, 31/12/2018. As per a report published by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in March, 2015, the sewage generation from urban areas in the country is estimated at 61,948 million litres per day (mld), against which the available sewage treatment capacity is only 23,277 mld (37% of the sewage generation). The untreated sewage is discharged into various rivers, other water bodies as well as the sea.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Illegal trade in wildlife articles, 31/12/2018. As per the information provided by the State authorities, illegal trade of wildlife and wildlife articles has not increased over the years. Details of the cases of illegal trade received from the State authorities during last three years is given in the Annexure.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Ill effects of air pollution, 31/12/2018. Ambient air quality is being monitored at 731 locations covering 312 cities/towns in 29 States and 6 Union Territories across the country under National Air Quality Monitoring Programme (NAMP). The ambient air quality data for million plus cities is attached at Annexure-I.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Cases of death of tigers, 17/12/2018. The incidents of tiger deaths due to poaching (including seizures) during the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 are 21, 41 and 28 respectively, while due to road and rail accidents during the same period are 3, 5 and 2 respectively. Details of tiger deaths from 2015 to 2017, including Maharashtra and Odisha, as reported by States, are included in this document.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Abatement of pollution in rivers, 17/12/2018. Pollution load in rivers has increased over the years due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. Rivers in the country are mainly polluted due to discharge of untreated and partially treated sewage from cities/towns and industrial effluents. Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in association with the State Pollution Control Boards monitors the water quality of rivers across the country through a network of monitoring stations under the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme.

Question raised in Rajya Sabha on Forest fires in the country, 02/04/2018. The details of State/Union Territory wise number of forest fire alerts reported by Forest Survey of India, Dehradun, a subordinate organization of this Ministry, during the last three years are given in Annexure-I.
