TAWANG: Chief Minister Nabam Tuki on Sunday flagged off the Clean Arunachal campaign at the Galden Namgyal Lhatse Monastery, popularly known as Tawang Monastery.

“We are starting holy mission from a holy place. This is a pious beginning and we should ensure success of the mission,” he said while giving a clarion call to the people of Arunachal to religiously follow the mission of clean and green Arunachal.

Itanagar: At a time when there is an overarching concern about the paradigms of development and protection of natural resources in Arunachal Pradesh, it was a very proud moment when the State and its traditional communities were applauded for their sustainable use and management of resources.

The applause came at the COP11 (XIth conference of parties convention on biological diversity) in Hyderabad yesterday. Various responses from the international audience at the side event on ‘Different Indigenous And New Approaches In Natural Resource Management In The Bio-Culturally Diverse State Of Arunachal Pradesh’ organized at the Conference showered praise on the traditional practices and natural resource management systems being followed by the tribal people and expressed how it is these communities who are at the forefront of protecting the world’s biodiversity.

Arunachal Pradesh is helping tribal residents use ‘globally significant medicinal plants’ for livelihood security through community management of forests. The State has a staggering 500 medicinal plant species, and more than half the forests come under the control of the indigenous people. At a presentation on indigenous and new approaches to natural resource management in the State, held on the sidelines of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity here on Thursday, tribal practitioners said they had set up seven Medicinal Plant Conservation Areas (MPCAs).

ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Principal Chief Conservator of Forests B S Sajwan today said the State government would soon enact its own Forest Act to protect the virgin forests, besides various flora and fauna in the State.

“We are serious about framing our own forest laws to protect the State’s biodiversity,” he said while responding to queries during a Press conference here this morning. He, however, declined to divulge the time frame by which the Act would be ready and said that the process would start soon.

ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has advocated for a scientific approach in conserving the biodiversity of the State.

Tuki, was addressing a high-level team from the department of environment and forest headed by Arunachal Pradesh State Medicinal Plant Board chairman Bamang Felix here yesterday, official sources said today. The team was slated to participate in a 10-day Conference of Parties (CoP) to be held at Hyderabad beginning October 8 next.

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh government will soon recruit 112 personnel for a company of Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) for more effective protection to the big cats, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said today.

“The company will be deployed in Pakke Tiger Reserve in East Kameng district and all the expenditures – both recurring and non-recurring – for raising the company will be borne by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA),” Tuki informed the assembly during discussion on The Arunachal Pradesh Forest and Special Tiger Protection Forces Bill 2012.

ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh government today introduced a bill in the Assembly seeking to protect the big cats.

The move aimed at protection of endangered animals was taken three days after a Royal Bengal tigress was hacked to pieces inside Itanagar Zoo. Chief minister Nabam Tuki , also in-charge of Environment and Forest, introduced ‘The Arunachal Pradesh Forest and Special Tiger Protection Forces Bill 2012’, during first day of the three-day session.

ITANAGAR: Five more deaths reported from remote Anjaw district bordering China took the toll to nine while another four persons still remained traceless in the wake of devastating floods that left over two lakh people affected spread over six districts.

Four persons were missing from worst affected Lohit district, official sources said here today. Economic adviser to the Chief Minister and lone MLA from Anjaw, Kalikho Pul today said five people died in different parts of the hilly district adding all seven administrative centers – Hayuliang, Hawai, Manchal, Goliang, Walong,Kibitho and Chaglogam were completely cut off.
