At a time when the proposed National Food Security Bill is being debated, the Canadian government has expressed interest in helping Gujarat reduce food-related issues.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat government has cleared a pilot project worth Rs 252.67 crore to make Ahmedabad slum-free. The clearance came at a meeting of the high-level state steering committee of the urban development mission, chaired by urban development minister Anandiben Patel.

The project is to be executed under the centrally-sponsored Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) that was publicized by the Congress before the last state election under the name ‘Ghar nu ghar’. The state government has also approved a pilot project for Rajkot worth Rs 20 crore under the same scheme.

Ahmedabad: The average age of guards in Palamau Tiger sanctuary is 53 and at Simlipal Tiger Sanctuary it is 49 years, but for guards in Gujarat it is 39 years.

Officials said that of 388 staffers, 149 are 20 to 30 years old. The study carried out by deputy conservator of forests Sandeep Kumar revealed that the average age of guards is 39 years, while that of foresters is 42.5 years. The guards and foresters are those actually in the field, responsible for conservation.

Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ) has sought fresh approval from the government for 1,840 hectare multi-product special economic zone, which was denotified in October due to non-conformity with SEZ rules.

"We have sought permission for a new SEZ and have made several representations to the government. We hope to get the approval in the present quarter itself," APSEZ's Chief Financial Officer B Ravi said. Government sources said meanwhile that the Board of Approval (BoA), the apex body for SEZs, has not yet taken up the matter.

Ahmedabad: The state rural development department has joined hands with Unicef Gujarat to develop statewide communication and advocacy strategy for promotion of open defecation-free communities and good hygiene practices in Gujarat.

The department and Unicef had undertaken a detailed research last year on the current hygiene practices of communities specifically related to hand washing and toilet use. A two-day workshop-cum-orientation programme was organized at Gandhinagar in presence of S L Amrani, additional commissioner and state coordinator, communication and capacity development unit (CCDU), Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan, and senior Unicef officials.
