A media report said that hundreds of fishes were found dead and floating in Phalguni (Gurupura) river, downstream of Maravooru vented dam, following the flow of industrial and domestic effluents into the river. The colour of the river has turned black due to the effluents released by the industries in Baikampady industrial area in Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka.

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has engaged RV College of Engineering, Bangalore to conduct an environmental audit of all the industries existing in the catchment area of Chandapura lake. The KSPCB has not accorded permission to any industry having captive effluent treatment plant to discharge its effluents into the common effluent treatment plant (CETP). Officers have been directed by the KSPCB to collect samples from the drains leading to Chandapura lake for the forensic analysis and trace pollutant studies.
