Karnataka questions Tribunal's methodology

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday posted for final hearing in November three special leave petitions filed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala challenging the final award passed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal on February 5, 2007. The Union Territory of Puducherry, which is also a party to the dispute, has not filed an SLP.

AGITATED by the lack of transparency in the functioning of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), 100 people, mostly farmers, on Tuesday sought clarifications under the Right to Information (RTI) Act from the District Environmental Engineer's office.
"TNPCB has consistently treated citizens as trouble-makers and enemies, and has gone out of its way to support polluters,' they alleged.

The newly elected BJP Government in Karnataka will face its first major crisis in resolving the sensitive Hogenakkal issue with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi announcing the revival of the controversial drinking water project in the Cauvery basin. The two neighbouring states went on the offensive after the Chief Minister-elect BS Yeddyurappa visited Hogenakkal last March and protested against the implementation of the drinking water project to cater to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts in Tamil Nadu.

Many farmers have switched over to sericulture from the conventional crops of paddy or groundnut in the central districts in the past two years. This has come in handy for officials of the Sericulture Department, which has planned to increase the area under sericulture in the Cauvery delta districts. Encouraged by the overwhelming response from farmers, the Department has planned to bring an additional 550 acres under sericulture (230 acres in Tiruchi district; 117 in Thanjavur; 65 in Perambalur; 112 in Pudukottai and 26 at the foot of the Pachamalai Hills).
