Hyderabad, June 7 A Central legislation will be enacted soon to pave way for the establishment of an independent environmental protection authority to ensure effective implementation of the Environment Protection Act, according to Mr Jairam Ramesh, Minister for Environment and Forests.

May 29: The Nannari plant, from which the famous Rayalaseema sharbat is made, has been listed among endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Apart from the Nannari plant, 46 other species from the State have also been put in the red list by the IUCN.

April 9: The district medical and health authorities have alerted people in the city to take precautionary measures against anthrax.
This warning was given in the wake of three deaths suspected to be caused by cutaneous anthrax in Visakhapatnam and confirmed incidence of the disease in Prakasam, Srikakulam, Chittoor, Kurnool and Mahbubnagar districts.

Tirupati Nov 27: Normal life has come to a grinding halt in Chittoor district for the last two days due to heavy rains following the Nisha cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. As on Thursday night, over a hundred houses have collapsed and thousands of acres with standing crops of paddy and vegetables marooned.

Tirupati, Nov. 26: Several villages continue to be in the grip of fear as the herd of 13 elephants that damaged standing crop in Bangarupalem mandal in Chittoor district have not left the area. Officials of the forest and revenue departments stood guard at the villages only till late in the evening on Tuesday.

Rajahmundry, Sept. 19: The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education has taken up a study to find out the rate of absorption of carbon by forest soils of the country.
