With many highway projects finding it difficult to reach financial closure, the government is seeking a review of guidelines for lending to such projects.

The second meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority’s inter-Ministerial group in Delhi on Tuesday could not make much headway on the contentious issue of the under-construction hydro-electric project on the Alaknanda at Srinagar in Uttarakhand.

New Delhi In a bid to spur real estate players to build homes for the low-income population, the proposal to allow them to access end-use linked external commercial borrowings (ECBs) for low-cost housing will soon be implemented. According to a senior government official, “the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is going to notify the scheme in a few days”.

The scheme would impose stiff end-use norms to ensure that overseas funds are not used by developers for other purposes. ECBs are much cheaper than local debt due to near zero interest rates in many developed countries. But the actual interest rate would depend upon the lenders’ assessment of the borrowers, economic viability of projects, expected returns and the credit rating of the borrower.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s tree committee on Friday approved a proposal to cut 481 trees in Goregaon (East) to make way for the construction of a single residential project.

In 2011, the committee had permitted cutting 278 trees in the same plot being developed by Kingston Properties Pvt Limited, known as Oberoi Realty Pvt Limited since 2009. Of the 481 trees, only 194 can be replanted. The decision has, however, been severely criticised by corporators and environmentalists.

Hyderabad-based Gulf Oil Corporation Limited has entered into a joint development agreement with Hinduja Estates Private Limited, also a Hinduja group company, to develop 76 acre of the former’s land at Kukatpally in Hyderabad.

While Gulf Oil will provide the land, Hinduja Estates will invest around Rs 3,500 crore in the township project, which will house residential and commercial complexes, Subhas Pramanik, managing director of Gulf Oil, told Business Standard.
