Enable Block:

The world is not on track to achieve forest goals of ending and reversing deforestation by 2030, critical for a credible pathway to the 1.5°C Paris Agreement goal, according to a new report by the UN-REDD Programme, UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the Green Gigaton Challenge (GGC).

The report summarises the findings of an international events series hosted by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) last year in the run up to the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow.

This latest report by the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC), Degree of Urgency: Accelerating Action to Keep 1.5°C on the Table, assesses progress since COP26 and outlines the priority areas for accelerated action at, and beyond, COP27.

The issue brief discusses the importance of communicating climate information to the larger public and enhance their understanding of countries' climate performance.

Despite the clear warning on the extreme dangers of exceeding 1.5°C warming from the IPCC, progress on new, more ambitious 2030 climate targets and participation in sectoral initiatives have stalled since COP26 in Glasgow. This goes against the clear agreement of the Glasgow Pact to update national 2030 climate targets in 2022.

The COP26 climate summit in Glasgow saw important progress made on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). However, there is much work still to be done to bring the GGA concept to life.

This report synthesises the main messages from the Resilience Hub and aims to help set the direction for future action towards COP27 and beyond.

Glasgow Climate Pact failed to understand that climate justice is the pre-requisite for an effective and ambitious global agreement, said Centre for Science and Environment.
