During the five year period, between 2006 and 2010, 5,838 farmers had been forced to commit suicide due to various reasons in Madhya Pradesh.
Six of them took the extreme step of ending their life due to debt burden.

Madhya Pradesh home minister Umashankar Gupta made this disclosure through a written reply in the state Assembly on Wednesday.

The state government has declared 135 tehsils of 37 districts as drought-hit. Principal Secretary Revenue Shri Anil Shrivastava issued notification to this effect on Wednesday. The list of drought-hit tehsils is as follows:

Indore: Launched by the Madhya Pradesh Government with the objective of making the birth of a girl child a happy moment, a total of 79,726 girls have benefited under the Ladli Laxmi Yojana in Indore division so far.

Facing protests over a plan to incinerate toxic waste of Union Carbide plant in Bhopal at a disposal unit at Pithampur, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has assured villagers that a study will be conducted and locals taken into confidence before a final view is taken.

To better preserve the green cover in the state, Madhya Pradesh forest department has decided to rope in tribals to protect some species of trees they have been worshipping for centuries.

The forest department has identified six species of trees which are worshipped as deities of their clans by bheel and bhilala tribes since time immemorial.

Chief Minster Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a meeting of State Wildlife Board here today which recommended setting up of National Dinosaur Fossil Park near Bagh in Dhar district. More than 100 dinosaur eggs were found in Bagh in Dhar district in the year 2006, which are estimated to be 6.5 crore to 7 crore years old. Besides, fossilised dinosaur nests have also been found in the district.

People in Indore and the adjoining Pithampur industrial area in Madhya Pradesh are protesting the incineration of Bhopal’s toxic waste near their homes. The waste disposal facility in Pithampur in Dhar district was completed recently. On March 18, the Madhya Pradesh state pollution control board allowed Ramky Enviro, the private company operating the facility, to start trial runs.

The State Government has recognised 36 tehsils as drought affected on the basis of norms laid down by it. For wide information to general public the Revenue Department has published a notice in this regard.
