Fisheries Minister Ajay Vishnoi has said that every possible effort will be undertaken by the state government for the economic uplift of fishermen, who are also being covered under collective insurance scheme with a view to protecting their future.

The gram sabha of Cavelossim Village Panchayat on Sunday opposed the land acquisition proposal of the Fisheries Department for the proposed construction of ship building, docking and repairs of boats at Mobor.
Sarpanch Edwin Cardozo said the proposal to acquired 17800 square metres for the proposed ship building project has been unanimously opposed by the villagers.

A four-year long big project is being implemented by the department of fisheries (DoF) at 135 upazilas of 23 districts of the country.
Started from July, 2010, the project is aimed at enhancing fish production in the country to meet the growing demand for the nutrition of the people through utilizing the existing water bodies of the country.

Fish farming is being done at 12 big reservoirs by the Cooperative Societies constituted by Fisheries Federation in the state. A fish hatchery unit is being constructed at Devlond Bansagar in Shahdol district with an aim to increase production of fish.

Due to illegal fishing by the non-local fishermen, who belong to nomad community, the Netravati river water is getting contaminated and it has been alleged that organisms living in water are being destroyed.

The State government is committed to promoting ornamental fish farming, said Minister for Fisheries and Registration S. Sarma. He was speaking after inaugurating the Kottayam Public Aquarium here on Tuesday.

The Minister highlighted the efforts made by the government in creating favourable conditions for the growth of the sector.

The State government on Monday told the High Court that it had cancelled all the sand mining leases in fishing territories and would not be giving out new licences.

The Court was hearing two separate petitions, in which the petitioners had contended that rampant sand mining in coastal areas was affecting the livelihood of fishermen and destroying the fragile biodiversity.
