GUWAHATI, Aug 19: Assam and other northeastern States seem to be entering a phase of severe shortage of essential commodities as the Contractor Federation of FCI (North East Zone) has categorically said that its indefinite strike will continue until a positive response comes from the authorities to the demands of the FCI contractors.

With the inflation rate of pulses still in double digits for more than a year, the government today said the supply of pulses would remain a critical problem for another two to three years.

The government is expecting an increase of two million tonnes (mt) in production of pulses in the current crop year (July 2010-June 2011).

JAIPUR: A Dutch expert on agriculture has warned India of a food crisis unless the country makes new investments in the sector and induces young individuals to take up farming. India will have to speed up its food production otherwise it will not remain self-sufficient in food in a few years' time, he has warned.
