Tripura Government has requested the Centre to change the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers Act, 2006 to give dwelling rights in forests to non-tribals who entered the State after 1947.

According to the present law, a patta can be given to a non-tribal whose family is living in forest land for the past 75 years.

This paper analyses historical origins of forest rights deprivation and contemporary processes through which local people are seeking to restore their forest rights, taking the case of the Indian Forest Rights Act 2006 as an example to illustrate wider issues in historical institutional theory.
