The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is partnering with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and its Forest Department to manage Sri Lanka's valuable forest resources more effectively, according to a press release issued by the U.S.

The set-up is straight out of a sci-fi movie. But its applications are for real disasters. Taking a cue from the tsunami that hit the Indian shores on December 26, 2004, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) virtually mapped Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu to study levels of inundation in the area for future use in case of natural disasters.

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the National Tiger Conserva- tion Authority (NTCA) are jointly conducting an all- India 2010 census on the tiger population in the wake of allegations that states had fudged tiger populations in the past.

In an effort to upgrade the conservation and protection of the Asiatic lions in the 1,412 square kilometres of the Gir National Park and Sanctuary, a Global Positioning System (GPS) would soon be deployed in the area.

The programme envisages providing the forest department staff with GPS gadgets which would be linked to a Geographical Information System (GIS) interface.

Planning is the most essential part of successful and result-oriented implementation of any scheme or plan. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) has a broad horizon and high promises; in this vision the government is investing a majority of its finances in this particular scheme.

Water supply systems are fundamental infrastructure components sustaining community public health and economic productivity. This article reviews water supply distribution systems and components, aspects of their design and operation, and geographic information systems (GIS) concepts and tools which support these activities.
