India plans to launch its own satellite to monitor greenhouse emissions and the government has already discussed the proposal with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief G Madhavan Nair and his predecessor K Kasturirangan, Environment & Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh told the Rajya Sabha today.

New Delhi: Taking a big leap in its technological quest, IIT Kanpur has developed a nano satellite which is expected to provide real-time data on drought, flood, vegetation and forestation.

The satellite, designed and developed by a group of students of the institute, will be handed over to Isro, which is expected to launch it by the end of the year.

India and China are in talks to monitor the melting of glaciers in the Himalayas, a border region crucial to both countries' water supplies, Minister for Environment Jairam Ramesh has said.

"We are talking to the Chinese about monitoring the Himalayan glaciers," Ramesh told the Financial Times.

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Environment and Forests will bring out a white paper on the current state of scientific knowledge on the Himalayan glaciers.

It will establish an institutional mechanism to monitor the trends and variability of glaciers and study the impact of changes on the hydrological regime in the region.

KOLKATA: The biggest impediment to the launch of Chandrayaan-2 is ensuring a soft landing for the rover on the moon, which is a crucial part of the mission, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman G. Madhavan Nair said here on Saturday.

The Karnataka Forest Department is all set to tie-up with the ISRO for locating forest fires with the help of satellites.

"The ISRO will send automated messages to the deputy conservator of forests/range officers about forest fires. This would help controlling the fire effectively," Chief Conservator of Forests (Communication & Information) M N Jayakumar said.
