Starting October 1, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike hopes, Bangalore residents will start segregating waste at their doorstep.

‘Hike fine on households that fail to segregate waste at source’

In a terse ruling on Monday, the High Court of Karnataka described the waste management policies of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as being equivalent to ‘garbage’. The Palike has now been directed to ensure power generation using waste, and to appoint executive magistrates in every ward to slap fine on households which fail to segregate ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ waste.

PHS Datashred, a national paper and IT shredding business, has reduced its fuel usage by nearly 25% in the past three years - 20% beyond its original target.

After not-so-successful attempts at source segregation of waste initiatives in the city, the Coimbatore Corporation is gearing up for introducing a few measures aimed at restarting the process. And the civic body has every reason to do so because at stake is Rs. 96 crore – the money it has invested to put in place a solid waste management system.

Sources in the Corporation say that under the Shunya – Zero Waste Management project, the civic body with help from ICLEI, an NGO, and others, is planning to conduct a day-long workshop on source segregation of waste for stake-holders and civil society organisations and follow it up with introducing the process in a few wards on a trial basis.

The garbage issue does not show any sign of abating in the city as the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is still finding it hard to tackle the situation. With communities living near dump yards that are largely unscientific erupting into protests, the civic body is striving to find a solution to the problem.

The BBMP is contemplating on an action plan to develop areas surrounding the dump yards, besides appointing Municipal Magistrates. With more communities protesting against garbage being dumped in their back yards, the BBMP has decided to provide basic civic facilities there

Don’t rubbish it

In its struggle to clear the mess that Bangalore has become in the wake of the ongoing garbage crisis, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seems to have become totally oblivious of other ways of getting rid of the rubbish. Not just that, the cash-strapped Palike appears to have forgotten that it can make a dime or two from the uncleared garbage.

In the light of careless handling of hazardous material by private companies at Cuncolim Industrial Estate, the government has been forced to step in and work out a solution. But shouldn’t stringent environmental safeguards be built into the industrial and investment policies to arrest fly-by-night operators, asks Guilherme Almeida
