UNDP's resident representative in Nepal, Robert Piper said Wednesday that the Government of Nepal has not been able to translate the risk agenda into action as most buildings constructed in the capital are hardly earthquake-resistant.
Speaking to media persons at a program in Kathmandu, he also expressed serious concerns as Nepal could be hit by major earthquake like that of 1934. He also urged the government to implement the New Disaster Management Act, 2007, which may prevent casualties.

Responding to food scarcities ahead of the festive season, the government is preparing to import 50,000 quintals of rice through Nepal Food Corporation to ease the shortage, a senior government official said.
A committee led by Gyandarshan Udash, joint secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, recommended to the ministry to import rice from any country to improve the supply amid reports of acute food shortage in different districts ahead of major feasts.

A serious outbreak of diarrhea has so far claimed the lives of nine children in remote villages of mid-western Humla district, the Kathmandu Post reported Monday.
Dozens of children also fell sick due to the outbreak that hit the Syada VDC of the district.
The Post quoted VDC secretary Gajabir Rokaya as saying that the outbreak has not yet been controlled due to unavailability of medicine in the village.

The Koshi Basin is the largest river basin of Nepal. It originates from the Tibetan Plateau of China. The Koshi river is also known as the "sorrow of Bihar". Floods from the Koshi river in the past have created havoc in the downstream area of Nepal and India leading to loss of lives and property and causing widespread human suffering. This report provides a preliminary assessment of the impacts of the Koshi flood disaster and rainfall forecasts.

Developing community-based forest enterprises (CBFEs) is an ideal development intervention in poor forest communities as they have the potential to generate income and employment for the poor while supporting sustainable management of forest resources. This potential is limited by various constraints, many of which are unique to forest-based enterprises.

Nepal introduced various community based forest management (CBFM) programmes that aim to improve forest management while improving the livelihoods of the forest dependent poor. One of these programmes is the Leasehold Forestry and Livestock Programme (LFLP). At least nine people have been killed, including five of the same family, when a landslide swept away their houses Wednesday night in Jajarkot district.

The landslide swept away the house of Amrita Shahi killing her, three of her sons, a daughter and four other family guests, in Khalanga of the district.

Karuna Shahi, who was seriously injured in the catastrophe, has been taken to district hospital for treatment.

Local villagers, personnel of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army are engaged in the rescue operation. Six dead bodies have been recovered from the site

Nepalese Canadian Association of Ottawa (NCAO) held a successful Annual Food Drive 2008.

"This year's food drive campaign to benefit the Ottawa Food Bank achieved an extraordinary success by exceeding its goal of raising $10,000. The drive raised $12,000 worth of non-perishable food and cash for the Ottawa Food Bank," says a press release by NCAO.

The flood hit people of Paya Tole at Malibar of Jaleshwor Municipality-12 are yet to receive relief materials although four days have slipped by since the village got deluged by flood water.
While the flood waters from local Ratu river continuing to wreak havoc in the village neither the government nor other concerned organizations have taken initiatives to rescue the villagers. After the flood waters ruined the food stocks and ravaged the households, people here are reeling under starvation and lack of sleep.
